3 Tips for Managing Remote Workers

Are you currently managing a remote team, or are you thinking about hiring people to work for you remotely? Managing remote teams has upsides and downsides. It isn’t for everyone, but with a great team, plenty of communication and a good workflow, it is possible. Here are 3 tips on how to do it successfully:

1. Make the right hires 

This one is crucial! Not everybody is capable of working well outside of the confines of an office space, but some people thrive in this kind of flexible work environment. One of the biggest advantages of hiring remote workers is being able to source talent all over the world, or within your own city.

Some cases even show that employees are happier and more productive when working remotely. Whether or not this will be true for you is up for you to decide. Following up with your hires and tracking their progress with work assignments is crucial. You want to make sure that when working remotely, they are still getting the projects done as efficiently and effectively as you would expect from your in-house workers. 

Want to give your in-house workers a chance to work remotely? Book them a desk at a co-working space for a day. They will thank you for the opportunity to work in a new space, boost their creative juices in a new scenery, and get some quiet head down space.

2. Communicate often 

Communication is key with your employees, especially your remote ones. It is important to have a structure to this as well.  While there are great tools to help, there is nothing quite as effective as a face to face meetings with your employees. If your remote workers live in another city, you should plan regular video calls to get updates on their progress. The most effective remote workers are those who truly feel like they are part of your team.

If your remote workers live in the same city, it is easy to schedule a sit down at your office. If you prefer a more quiet space or don’t have your own office space yet, it is easy and cost effective to book a private meeting room. We personally prefer this option!  

3. Establish your workflow 

It is important that your remote workers are held accountable for the projects they take on. An effective way of doing this is having a conversation with them to establish a workflow that works best for you and for them. Everyone works a little differently, so be flexible. Understand how they like to work but make sure you set the expectations and clearly define the goals so that your workers are able to get their tasks done within a reasonable amount of time.

Hiring remote workers can be a great option for many people in many different phases of their business journey. When you’re just starting out and you don’t have enough cash to get your own office space, it is sometimes the only option. When you are growing your team but can’t afford to bring on a new full-time hire, sometimes it is the best alternative. Even when your business is at a more mature stage, it can be good to let your workers take a break and work away from the office every once in awhile.
